You get the feeling that if Mayor Bill de Blasio said the sky was blue, Gov. Andrew Cuomo would not only say it’s green, he’d have planes spraying the air over New York City with food coloring.
The latest, of course, was Cuomo stepping all over de Blasio’s hopeful, and hope-inspiring, announcement Thursday that the city will aim to reopen completely by July 1.
What is it with these guys from Queens? Coming off much like former President Donald Trump, the gov affected a whiny voice to mock the mayor: “I want it opened up on Monday. I want to open up New York City on Tuesday. I want it open on Wednesday. I want Buffalo opened up on Thursday.”
This whole shtick has gotten old, particularly since no one believes the gov’s claims that “we’re managing it by the science, by the data,” because far too many of his diktats have nothing to do with either.
Which is one reason he might not have the power to stop things by July 1: The Legislature is slowly overruling his arbitrary orders and might yet whittle his pandemic authority down to nothing.
So, governor, why don’t you sit this one out? Or better yet, Mayor de Blasio, why don’t you call on Andrew not to step down. Considering how contrarian he has to be, Cuomo would probably resign tomorrow just to spite you.
